Cenovus Energy, FSG Technologies and Nexen present their field pilot project to the ERA Oil Sands Innovation Challenge review team
Calgary, 6 February 2018
Cenovus Energy, FSG Technologies and Nexen recently had the privilege of presenting their FSG field pilot project to the review team of the Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Oil Sands Innovation Challenge. The team—made up of Harbir Chhina, Executive Vice-President and Chief Technical Officer of Cenovus; Susan Sun, Project Leader at Cenovus; Olivier Perraud, CEO of Ingenica and President of FSG Technologies; Marc Gouyon-Rety, General Manager of FSG Technologies; and Denis Westphalen, Project Leader at Nexen—had the opportunity to highlight the strengths and benefits of the proposed innovation project and to answer questions from the review team members in person. After reviewing the various project proposals submitted to them, ERA will announce their funding decisions in the first week of March.
Funding from ERA would help FSG move forward with our field pilot project, which has received the support of COSIA and is drawing considerable interest from provincial and federal agencies. The FSG field pilot project, following on the very successful laboratory-scale test program completed in 2015–16 in Montréal, aims to build and operate a commercial-scale field prototype at an existing SAGD facility within three years, in order to:
- Prove the design of a full-scale FSG unit, including a modular concept, natural gas heating, centrifugal pumps, multiple-path heat exchangers, economizer and air pre-heater;
- Verify and strengthen the validity of fouling trends projections;
- Confirm the energy and water efficiency of the FSG process;
- Develop failure modes and maintenance procedures.
Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) was established as a key partner of the Government of Alberta to address Alberta’s climate leadership priorities. ERA has a mandate to identify and accelerate innovative solutions that secure Alberta’s success in a lower carbon economy. In July 2017, ERA launched a call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) seeking innovative technological solutions for improving the cost-competitiveness and greenhouse gas emissions profile of Alberta’s oil sands industry. All EOIs received by ERA in response to this call were reviewed, and some applicants, including FSG Technologies, were invited to submit a full project proposal.
